Dazzling good looks This dynamic hot hatch is guaranteed to make onlookers just a little green with envy. And assuming they don’t hear it first, they’ll certainly take notice when the Civic Type R cruises into view. Aggressively styled with a purposeful front end that features slender headlamps, as well as a curved bonnet and sweeping roofline, this is a car that turns heads effortlessly. It doesn’t cost the earth, yet looks a million dollars.
Aerodynamic accoutrements A performance car needs an aerodynamic design. The Civic Type R features a front splitter, an unmissable rear spoiler and side skirts - the latter embellished with sporty red stripes – all styled to minimise wind resistance. Neatly finished off with a carbon-fibre-style finish, each offers enhanced aerodynamics.
Model-specific badging The standard Civic is a car to be proud of – the Type R even more so. This is why it comes with all the bells and whistles, including distinctive red Honda badges that reinforce this automobile’s speedy credentials.
Light my fire Even when there’s no natural light, the Type R still manages to make a strong impression. LED daytime lights produce eye-catching illumination while making the car easily visible to other motorists, and LED front fog lamps, side indicators and dusk-sensing headlamps, ensure visibility is maximised at all times.
Interior Despite its athletic inclinations, this top-of-the-range Civic is extremely practical. Step inside and you’ll notice a spacious cabin that easily accommodates five adults, a host of stowage cubbies and a generous boot. Not only that, the cockpit is ergonomically designed to ensure everything you need falls easily to hand. With a touchscreen infotainment system, steering wheel-mounted controls and more, access to music, climate control, navigation and more is effortless. Of course, the sporty touches are present throughout to give a racetrack feel too.
Sporty accents The super-stylish cabin more than matches up to the Type R’s striking exterior with model-specific bucket seats for the driver and front passenger, each rendered in eye-popping red fabric. Get to grips with a black and red Alcantara-clad steering wheel, and experience the thrill of the drive through alloy sports pedals.
Considerable cargo capacity This versatile car features a 420-litre boot space, which should more than suffice when it comes to weekly shopping expeditions or trips to the airport laden with luggage. Should you need more capacity, simply drop the car’s 60/40 split-folding rear seats and you’ll have a generous 1,580-litre cargo volume at your disposal.
Monitoring performance Keeping tabs on every facet of the Type R’s performance is easy, especially since an LCD instrument cluster is included as standard. The stylish array features a g-force meter, a stopwatch (with lap-timer functionality), a boost meter and brake-pressure and throttle-position indicators.
Peak performance As versatile as the Civic Type R undoubtedly is, it’s the car’s power and lightning-quick pace that get most drivers excited. Propelled by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, this dynamic runner delivers a thrilling drive in any situation. Depending on your motoring tastes, preferences and mood, you can choose one of three drive modes that include Comfort and Sport. Select the former for ordinary urban environments and the latter for motorway cruising – or choose +R for the full flat-track experience.
Maximum torque The Type R’s turbo-powered engine produces a peak torque of 400Nm at 2500 to 4500rpm, which means it generates plenty of straight-line power and has no problem whatsoever when moving up steep gradients or shifting at speed with all seats filled and a boot stacked with cargo.
Super-quick As you’ve no doubt gathered, the Civic Type R is no shrinking violet – this much is clear by just looking at it. And when it comes to acceleration, the car doesn’t hold back, proceeding from a standing stop to 100km/h in roughly 5.7 seconds. It’s able to perform a top speed of 272km/h too.
Sizzling yet safe Although the Type R has not formally been tested by ANCAP, all other Civic variants have passed with flying colours, each earning a maximum five-star rating. This particular iteration is loaded with safety features such as Forward Collision Warning, which monitors the space between the car and the vehicle in front, helping to prevent collisions.
